Smoke Signals II

Sinais de fumo / Smoke Signals (2025) – still frames

Smoke Signals is a multichannel installation conceived as a device for presenting and bringing together individual images and film sequences of different kinds and origins. Through the simultaneity of projections, the work takes the form of an atlas of moving images, a discursive apparatus in which different temporalities intersect, opening up possibilities for association and interpretation beyond the linearity of image sequences.

The title invokes the ancestral imaginary of communication through fire and smoke, evoking forms of message transmission that dispense with words and explore the relationship between the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the intangible.

Smoke Signals II brings together a series of sequences shot on 16mm film during Carnival in 2025, centred on the Queima do Galheiro (Burning of the Galheiro) in the parish of Fradelos, Vila Nova de Famalicão. Following the communities of Quinta do Sapugal, Ferreirinhos, Valdossos and Outeiro de Cima, the footage traces the collective processes of gathering plant material, building the galheiros and preparing the celebrations, culminating in the burning of these monumental structures, which can exceed fifteen metres in height.

Associated with the clearing of agricultural land and ancient rituals of purification, fertility and renewal of natural cycles, the Queima do Galheiro is a collective manifestation in which labour, celebration, competition and ritual intertwine. Fire takes on both a material and symbolic dimension, transforming the vegetal constructions into great bonfires that bring the community together around a shared event.

This footage was produced in the context of the project Reflexo de Adorar (To Adore Reflex), developed between 2025 and 2026, with the support of DGARTES, Criatório and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
